The Colorado Public Defender's Office is a state wide agency comprised of 21 regional trial offices, one appellate division, and a central administrative office. Each office has a supervising attorney who is appointed by the State Public Defender. The Office employs 410 lawyers and a total staff of 650.
Employees of the Office of the State Public Defender are not subject to the Colorado State or Judicial Department's personnel system. By statute, section 21-1-102,C.R.S. all attorneys serve at the pleasure of the Colorado State Public Defender and cannot otherwise engage in the practice of law. All other public defender employees are subject to the agency's personnel rules.
